Spice Without Borders

Our History

From the Margins to a Global Movement

A Vision Inspired by Experience

Spice Without Borders was established to address one of the most pressing challenges facing many communities across Africa and beyond: the untapped potential of young people who possess talent, ideas, and determination but lack access to opportunities, mentorship, and enabling ecosystems.

Founded in Kenya, the organisation emerged from the lived realities of inequality, limited educational opportunities, youth unemployment, and social exclusion. These experiences shaped a clear conviction that sustainable transformation begins when individuals from underserved communities are empowered to become leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, creatives, and community changemakers.

Rather than viewing adversity as a barrier, Spice Without Borders was founded on the belief that it can become the catalyst for purpose, innovation, and lasting social impact.

Building a Platform for Grassroots Leadership

Following extensive experience in community development, entrepreneurship, technology, civic engagement, and youth empowerment, founder Erick Inghatt Matsanza envisioned an organisation that would move beyond traditional capacity building.

The result was Spice Without Borders—a borderless movement that identifies, develops, connects, and accelerates changemakers capable of creating practical solutions within their own communities.

Inspired by the resilience and transformative power symbolised by chilli, the organisation adopted the SPICE framework—Strength, Purpose, Innovation, Creativism, and Equity—which continues to guide its leadership philosophy, programmes, and ecosystem.

From One Initiative to an Ecosystem of Impact

What began as a single initiative has evolved into a growing leadership and social innovation ecosystem serving changemakers across multiple sectors.

Today, Spice Without Borders delivers integrated programmes that help individuals discover purpose, develop leadership and entrepreneurial competencies, build collaborative networks, and accelerate sustainable community impact.

Its ecosystem includes flagship initiatives such as the Spicedemy™, SpiceTalks™, Spicy Awards™, Kilimo Accelerator, SpiceFest Colour of Change™ , Coffeetage, anzacard™, Vox Pilipili, Spice Bikers, and other platforms designed to nurture ethical, innovative, and inclusive leadership.

Recognition and Growth

Over the years, Spice Without Borders has gained recognition for its innovative approach to grassroots leadership development and social innovation.

The organisation and its founder have received several honours, including the 2023 KEMEN Awards – Non-Profit Leader of the Year, the 2023 Digitally Fit Awards Gold Award for Community-Based Organisation, and nomination for the 2025 Digitally Fit Person of the Year.

More importantly, the organisation’s impact is reflected in the growing network of changemakers who are launching community initiatives, social enterprises, advocacy campaigns, and collaborative solutions that create measurable social and environmental change.

Looking Ahead

Today, Spice Without Borders continues to expand as a global movement and leadership institute committed to empowering changemakers from marginalised communities.

Through leadership development, social innovation, entrepreneurship, creative empowerment, strategic partnerships, and community-driven action, the organisation is cultivating a new generation of purpose-driven leaders equipped to address complex local and global challenges.

The journey from the margins has become a movement—one that continues to inspire individuals and communities to transform challenges into opportunities and ideas into lasting impact.
