There are many definitions and descriptions of the words used in diversity and inclusion work, described by many as D&I. Everyone comes to this area of practice with preconceived notions and beliefs, based on their personal experiences.
We refer to diversity and inclusion rather than D&I because we use an inclusive approach to communications and avoid acronyms, which easily become insider language and can rob words of their true meaning. The following are the definitions we use for the words diversity, inclusion and the concept of diversity and inclusion.
Diversity is about the individual. It is about the variety of unique dimensions, qualities and characteristics we all possess.
Inclusion is about the collective. It is about creating a culture that strives for equity and embraces, respects, accepts and values difference.
Diversity and inclusion is about capturing the uniqueness of the individual; creating an environment that values and respects individuals for who they are and their talents, skills and abilities to the benefit of the collective.
We believe that only through embracing inclusion can we fully understand and respect our people, and effectively achieve our organizational aims. For diversity and inclusion to be successful, it must be woven into the fabric of organizational culture as an everyday occurrence that happens naturally among teams, participants, and leaders.
At Spice Without Borders, we recognize and respect the value of diversity. We aim to foster an inclusive culture where all our people can be their authentic-selves, with access to equal opportunities to contribute and be heard.
To drive inclusive work cultures, leaders must help employees feel supported, heard, and valued. Leaders must acknowledge and overcome the negative while they celebrate and strengthen the positive. This requires rewarding inclusive behaviors while simultaneously and proactively addressing the exclusionary behaviors that single out, overlook, and devalue individuals’ unique contributions and senses of belonging.
At Spice Without Borders we seek to challenge discrimination through celebrating diversity, promoting equality, and embracing inclusion.
We therefore do not discriminate participants based on gender, ethnicity, race, colour, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, socio-economic status, disability or any other status.
Selection to our programs is not based on academic performance or qualification however participants need to have a social change idea or project that will create a mindset change in their community.
